UC Berkeley is the No. 3 public university in the country when it comes to value for its in-state students, according new rankings from Kiplinger, the business and personal finance publisher.

In the new rankings, Berkeley climbed one rung up the list from fourth place for in-state students at American public universities in 2015. Only the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and the University of Virginia ranked higher.

When it comes to out-of-state students, Kiplinger ranked Berkeley as 7th among publics, a notch down from last year’s 6th-place showing.

Kiplinger bases its value rankings on these criteria: admission rate, four-year graduation rate, total costs per year, cost after need-based aid is factored in, average debt at graduation and median earnings after 10 years among students who received financial aid.

On the salary yardstick, Berkeley graduates placed fourth among public universities, with median earnings of $60,800 per year for graduates who started at Berkeley 10 years earlier and received federal financial aid.
